The challenge

Installation of a battery storage system

Energy is precious and should be used as efficiently as possible, especially where electricity consumption is particularly high. An industrial company in Slovenia therefore commissioned the installation of a battery storage system. When it came to lifting the individual components into their designated positions, the company relied on Prangl’s proven support.

Our solution

Precise project execution

Battery storage systems connected to the power grid are used to stabilise grid frequency by balancing electricity generation and consumption. Electricity from wind farms and photovoltaic systems is rarely fed into the grid at a completely steady rate. When there is surplus electricity, the batteries are charged, which in turn lowers the grid frequency. If wind and solar power provide too little electricity, the batteries discharge again. Installing a grid-supporting battery storage system of this kind naturally requires careful planning. Choosing the right mobile crane is also essential.

500-tonne telescopic crane

The Prangl team assigned to the project selected a 500-tonne telescopic crane for the demanding lifting operations, not only because of its lifting capacity but also because of the long working radius it offered. Given the restricted access to the site, the access route had to be planned carefully. Positioning the crane also presented a challenge, as it had to be set up precisely between the existing structures. The team identified the optimum position. The large crane was set up and fitted with 180 tonnes of counterweight. The work could then begin.

45 tonnes, 28-metre working radius

The seven batteries, each weighing 45 tonnes, were delivered one at a time by truck to the crane position. Fitted with heavy-duty slings, they were unloaded from the trucks by crane and then lifted into their designated positions at a maximum working radius of 28 metres. This required exceptionally precise work from the crane operator. With absolute concentration, the crane operator manoeuvred the valuable cargo into place. The installation team then guided the containers into their exact positions with millimetre precision. Thanks to the excellent cooperation between everyone involved, the job was completed without complications.

Accurate and timely project information is the basis for successful project delivery.
