Modular residential building

The challenge
Construction of a modular residential complex
Prangl was commissioned to construct a residential complex in Amstetten, made up of prefabricated room modules. The main challenge in this case was the tight schedule. There was only a little leeway for preliminary research, obtaining all the necessary permits and carrying out all the necessary measures afterwards.
Our solution

Turnkey modules
Prefabricated houses for builders in a hurry have been around for a long time. Now there is a new trend: Buildings made up of individual room modules that are completely prefabricated in the factory – including electrical and sanitary installations. Several of these turnkey modules can be combined to form a complete house – in a very short time, i.e. in just a few days. Assembling the modules requires not only the right mobile crane, but also an experienced team. Prangl took on the task of constructing the modern residential complex. However, some fundamental preparatory work was required first...

Special permits
Initial checks revealed that special permits had to be applied for in advance due to the immediate proximity to Amstetten Regional Hospital. This was because the optimal location for the telescopic crane was directly in the flight path of rescue helicopters and was just 50 metres away from the landing site as the crow flies. This meant that AustroControl, the Amstetten district authority, the Christopherus and ÖAMTC rescue control centres and the Amstetten municipal police had to be involved in this important approval process. Thanks to the excellent preparation by the Prangl team, the permits arrived in good time before work began.

350-tonne mobile crane
The mobile crane was selected based on the load case, lifting capacity and boom length: A 350-tonne telescopic crane with Y-guying and 120 tonnes of ballast was used. In order to work as efficiently as possible, the yellow giant was positioned such that all containers (each weighing 20 tonnes, 12.5 metres long, 5.40 metres wide and around 3 metres high) could be lifted from a single location. The prefabricated modules were delivered to the construction site and then assembled piece by piece with the utmost precision by the Prangl team using a crane with a 29-metre reach.

Caution during rescue flights
Extreme caution was required every time an emergency arrived at the hospital by rescue helicopter. When a helicopter arrived or departed, work on the building had to be stopped immediately and all loose parts on the construction site secured. Thanks to coordination with the rescue control centre, all precautionary measures were carried out without incident. This also applied to the rapid construction of the residential complex within a single day, which finally consisted of two floors with 10 modules each. A total of 10 residential units are now available in the brand-new residential complex in Amstetten.
