53 Silos

The challenge
Removal of 53 containers
A good concept is needed to remove a very large quantity of heavy containers that are no longer needed from a closed industrial hall. A company in the Tyrol approached Prangl with this special task and entrusted the yellow specialists with the responsibility. A safe, efficient and time-saving solution was required here.
Our solution

Safe workflow
The Prangl team had a total of 53 silos of different sizes waiting to be removed and transported away. The weights ranged up to 20.7 tonnes. The containers had diameters of up to 4.2 metres and lengths of up to 12.5 metres. The biggest challenge was the safe workflow and the coordination of different professionals. The client attached great importance to this. For this reason, the situation was assessed in advance by Prangl's HSEQ experts on site and only then was the exact work process determined.

250 tonne telescopic crane
First, the roof was opened with the help of a construction crane. This cleared the way for the cranes positioned on the outside of the hall, along the fence to the road. A 250 tonne telescopic crane was selected as the main crane. Thanks to its 78 metre telescopic boom, the entire operation could be carried out from just one location. Due to the limited space in the tank farm, the silos had to be excavated with millimetre precision. And in the outdoor area, pipe bridges with pipes that transport sensitive liquids posed a particular challenge.

Tandem lift
As the crane driver had no view of the loads, he was only able to master this tricky job with the support of his colleagues in the hall and move the crane hook to the right place. With the utmost care, one container after the other was slowly lifted out of the hall and placed on the narrow strip between the hall and the site fence. A 90 tonne telescopic crane was then used to turn the silos one by one into a horizontal position so that they could be loaded onto the waiting lorries.

Experienced personnel
33 containers were transported to their new destination immediately after being lifted out. 20 units were loaded onto a Prangl 4-axle flatdeck, which transported them to a nearby storage site. There they were unloaded by a 40-tonne truck-mounted crane and a 92-tonne loader crane respectively and are waiting there for their new destination. Thanks to the experienced, well-trained staff, the lifts went without a hitch. The all-important precise communication with all the companies involved was also a guarantee that the work could be completed to the customer's complete satisfaction.
